A Legacy of History and Heritage

Holumba Haven is not just a retreat; it is a place steeped in history. The first cottage, lovingly built in 1935 by the late Mr. T. Pempahishey, one of the originators of motor transport in Kalimpong (1927), remains a cornerstone of the property. This historic cottage, later named "The Hermitage" (Magnolia) by the Ven. Bikchu Sangharakshita in the 1950s, holds a special place in the hearts of many.

Sangharakshita, a renowned Buddhist teacher and author, resided here and fondly referred to the property as his "Garden of Eden" in his book Facing Mount Kanchenjunga, published by Windhorse Books. His time at Holumba Haven imbued it with a profound spiritual resonance, making it an inspiring destination for those seeking peace, reflection, and connection to a deeper legacy.

I fail to understand why this property has not been accorded Heritage status as yet!. The several cottages that dot the resort are vintage and have an entirely out of the earth ambience. The bedroom, the closet, the washroom, and a little looby are so unique and cozy that you feel frozen in time. The food was delicious, although the dining time was a bit early. Mrs Thinley and Mr Norden were very amicable hostesses and hosts. The entire property is enveloped in greenery which adds another star to the ratings. All in all I highly recommend this hellava place to fellow travellers.

We had a lovely time here. My daughter in particular loved the place and the greenery all around. She loves plants and being surrounded by so many flowers meant that she refused to leave Holumba for any sight-seeing. We definitely want to come back here. We could not see the next cottage from our window due to the think foliage. I think for city folks like us this was a bonus. The warmth of the hosts (and Kesang in particular) really comes through. Folks who are scared of dogs should be warned that they have six dogs including two Great Danes and an Alsatian. However, their six well-behaved dogs are really well-trained.

A beautiful homestay situated in the lap of nature. Holumba is quaint property located a couple of kilometres away from the main town. Home to various variety of flowers and butterflies, we enjoyed every moment we stayed there. We were welcomed by Mrs Thinlay, she is extremely polite and friendly. She guided us on planning our tour the next day and suggested some really good eateries around Kalimpong. It is a lovely place for people who love fur babies, the 3 dogs and 3 pups were like cherry on the cake. Our 2 nights at Holumba were peaceful and perfect.

Houlmba Haven, indeed this place is heaven, Spread over 2.5 acres land. This is the most mesmerizing property in Kalimpong, located just next to the fire station. This property is maintained by Thinlay family. You will feel like home and everything here is very beautiful. This property is home to 60 different varieties of Orchids and it is originally belong to British Era. Most of the artificates in this property are either from Tibet or from British Era. Our host Ms. Thinlay is among one of the best host, I ever encountered. She will make sure that you will enjoy your stay. If you are looking for some local delicacy, you can refer to them for suggestions.
